Chapter 20
Charlie, a guy in his twenties with a balaclava over his face, emerged from a house with a rifle in hand. Tightly bound to the tip of the rifle was a knife.
"This stupid Mike is going to get himself killed by leaving like this," he said to himself.
"Come back," Sarah said from the door. "You're going to get yourself killed too. He'll come back on his own."
Everyone was worried. They knew that going out into the street meant risking death. The epidemic outbreak, the madness of the monsters, had exploded just over a day ago and everyone was on alert. They hadn't really encountered many survivors, and most people on the street were infected. Well, they didn't even know if they should still call them people. They hadn't explored the area much, but the chaos seemed to be concentrated in the downtown area of the city and they were far from there.
"I'll find him and drag him back by the hair!" Charlie said, and continued to advance, walking the streets and looking around. He crossed paths with a zombie on the way, kicked it and stabbed the tip of his rifle into its eye. He kept walking blindly, trying to find his friend Mike, but couldn't find him anywhere.
Suddenly he heard a whistle in the distance, soft but recognizable: it was Mike. A few hours ago he had gone out to explore, search for food, and, without losing hope, try to find clues that would lead him to find Ivan, who had left the day before and never returned.
When he heard his friend in the distance, he ran as fast as he could. He didn't know why his friend would have to draw attention to something or, worst case scenario, someone. It was an unnecessary risk, he knew. He ran as fast as he could and when he got close enough to see, he noticed that Mike was aiming his rifle at four guys who had their backs turned.
"What are you waiting for?!" Mike shouted.
The young men turned slowly when one of them quickly reached for his waist.
"No!" Charlie shouted, but it was too late. His friend had already pulled the trigger.
The young man fell to the ground.
The man was behind them, demanding that they turn around. The four friends looked at each other briefly, not knowing what to do other than obey, but Lucas felt a sense of imminent danger and, being the only one with a loaded gun, felt obligated to react.
He didn't know if the man's words were true or not, he could kill them either way. As he turned around, he tried to grab the gun, but he wasn't fast enough, the man fired first and Lucas fell to the ground.
"Lucas!" Alan shouted and rushed to help him, at that moment he didn't care that the man was pointing a gun at them.
"I told you not to be heroes!" the man said. "This was easy, you just turned around and that was it, but you
